Lotus Emeya: From the Alps to the Billboards

Lotus Cars commissioned me to capture imagery for their latest campaign, creating a full suite of visuals that would work everywhere from giant roadside billboards around London, to social feeds viewed on a phone screen.

The final assets went on to feature across some of London’s most recognisable locations – including the entrance and departure lounge at London City Airport, 14 London Underground stations, large-format Chelsea billboards, as well as Lotus’ social media channels, press materials and website.

FIA Formula E Season 10

Season 10 of FIA Formula E was a thrilling journey from start to finish. An opportunity to shoot arguably one of the most difficult subjects in some of the world’s most iconic cities and locations globally. I started the season working with Spacesuit Media, capturing content for Formula E, Andretti, and Envision Racing during round 1 in Mexico City, a truly beautiful track designed for racing. Saturday morning during the 7 am FP2 start we were blessed with a sunrise session allowing me to capture my favourite track content of the season…

From Mexico, I followed the series to round 4 in São Paulo, round 5 in Tokyo, and rounds 6 & 7 in Misano, Italy (not including all the impromptu ski trips and adventures in between flights of course)

Midway through the season, I was invited to work exclusively for Jaguar TCS Racing, a huge honour and a new challenge for me to explore. Starting with round 8 in Monaco, I documented their drivers Mitch Evans and Nicky Cassidy's successes ultimately leading to an unforgettable final race in London where Jaguar clinched the team championship, with Cassidy and Evans finishing 2nd and 3rd overall— both an incredibly difficult but season for the team to remember.

Behind the Scenes with Aurora Media Worldwide: AlUla, Saudi Arabia

During an extended 6-week visit to Saudi Arabia, I created a gallery of behind-the-scenes photography to support Aurora Media in creating industry-leading pitch decks, reinforce relationships with contributors and ultimately, enable directors to close more pitches to win clients. As a professional photographer, I aimed to document not only the size, scale and scope of Aurora Media’s operation but also to capture more casual, perhaps funny and personal moments of the crew whilst on set.

Highlighting the Team

My BTS photography focuses on the talented individuals behind the project – from camera operators and directors to locals and resident office cats. These images showcase their contributions, reinforcing relationships with freelancers and highlighting the collaborative spirit that drives Aurora Media Worldwide.

Demonstrate Capability

Aurora Media Worldwide is one of the largest video production houses offering services ranging from short-form social media content to global live TV broadcasting. The tools can range from Go-Pros and gimballs to state-of-the-art Cine Cameras and helicopters; capturing details and context of these in action was on my mind when shooting this gallery, ensuring Aurora was well equipped to show clients the capability and scale of the agency.

Enhancing Future Collaborations

This BTS gallery offers a transparent and engaging glimpse into their workflow. Aurora Media Worldwide can use these images in future pitch decks, attracting new clients and partners by showcasing the meticulous effort and lively work culture behind their projects as well as building relationships with the freelancers and employees that actually make it all happen.

Here are a few of the hundreds of moments I captured in early 2024…

E1 Series: Jeddah Grand Prix

In February 2024, I had the privilege of shooting the world’s first E1 Series GP in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This exciting new sport provided me with an all-new challenge as a professional sports photographer; water…

Capturing the dynamic nature of the Racebirds as they bolt around the watercourse, reaching speeds up to 58mph, slamming into waves and launching out of the water as they rise onto their hydrofoils was extremely difficult, especially shooting from a media boat that was also moving.

I decided to bring my Sony 200-600mm G lens to capture the action out at sea which proved to be the perfect tool that dealt with the stabilisation effectively and gave me the range to shoot a variety of angles. I paired this up with a 70-200 2.8 GM and my usual Sigma prime lenses to shoot the pilots and details on the pontoon.

Looking forward to more E1 races this season with Spacesuit Media, stay tuned…

Azimuth: Until the Sun Comes Up

The Royal Commission for AlUla hosted a unique spectacle deep within the rocky valleys of AlUla, Saudi Arabia; a music festival going all through the night ‘Until the Sun Comes Up’ featuring some of the world’s top musicians such as The Kooks, Peggy Gou, Jorja Smith and many more.

During the 2 day shoot, I was tasked with capturing not only the main acts seen in the gallery below but also a host of activities such as food stands, activities, people and brand sponsors.

This project was commissioned by Aurora Media Worldwide

GT World Challenge - Japan

This summer Xynamic Automotive Agency sent me out to Japan to shoot 2 back-to-back races at Suzuka and Motegi for the GTWCh Asia. This breif involved shooting for the multiple Mercedes AMG GT teams as well as the Hub Auto Porsche team to rapidly deliver imagery capturing all aspects of the racing weekend from garage details, podiums, driver portraits, on track action and more, for social media and website use.

Formula 1: 2023 British Grand Prix

I was invited to attend the 2023 British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit to create captivating, premium photography for Formula 1’s paddock club, covering a range of exclusive activities such as pitlane walks, driver parades and guest speakers, to the range of exquisite hospitality suites available for paddock club pass holders. Here is a sample of my work commissioned by 16K Agency on behalf of Formula 1 Paddock Club.

Nyjah Houston at Swerve Festival 2023

During my extended trip to Saudi Arabia, I had the opportunity to shoot world-renowned professional skater Nyjah Houston outside the iconic Maraya Concert Hall in AlUla.

Nyjah Houston is arguably the most successful pro skater of all time; in 2006, Nyjah became the youngest X-Games competitor at age 11, winning an impressive 13 gold medals there, becoming a six-time world champion and collecting countless other accolades throughout his illustrious career.

Nyjah was invited to AlUla, Saudi Arabia to attend Swerve Festival; a world-first event bringing artists and athletes together. Click here to learn more about Swerve Festival. The organisers of Swerve Festival invited me and talented UK filmmakers Ben Anthony Horton and Max Wilson with Aurora Media Worldwide, to capture the unique spectacle in our own way…

AlUla, Saudi Arabia's most beautiful travel destination?

I was invited to spend a month in Saudi Arabia as a professional photographer to capture a huge range of activities over the tourism season in the historic oasis town of AlUla.

During my time in AlUla, I was sent on a variety of photography assignments including capturing the AlUla Skies Festival; this featured everything from hot air balloon rides, helicopter tours and star gazing to the ‘Maraya Glow Show’ and countless other activities throughout the beautiful region.

Here are a few favourites from the AlUla Skies Festival shot for the Royal Commission for AlUla.

New K-Tech Suspension Upgrades for Beta

I recently had the opportunity to team up with K-Tech Suspension and enduro racing legend Wayne Braybrook to capture the testing of some exciting new suspension upgrades for the 2023 Beta 300RR and Beta X-Trainer. The shoot took place at Raw Enduro's 70-acre plot in Blackburn, where Wayne put the motorcycles through their paces, testing the suspension upgrades on extreme enduro terrain.

As a photographer, it was an incredible experience to capture the action as Wayne threw the motorcycles off drops, through rivers, trees, and marshes. With K-Tech Suspension's technical expertise and Wayne's racing skills, the testing was an exciting display of the motorcycles' capabilities.

Exploring Iceland in the new Land Rover Defender

I recently had the opportunity to embark on a winter photography adventure along Iceland's famous south coast. Thanks to Zero Car, I was able to take on this trip in a brand new PHEV Land Rover Defender 110. This trip was an incredible opportunity to capture the beauty of Iceland's landscape and put the Defender’s capabilities to the test.

The Land Rover Defender 110 was the perfect choice for exploring Iceland's rugged terrain. Its obvious off-road capabilities, coupled with its eco-friendly PHEV technology, made it an ideal choice for navigating through Iceland's various landscapes; and yes charging a PHEV is very cheap and easy in Iceland despite the remote locations we visited.

Our journey began with a drive through the popular south coast spots, which included famous landmarks such as the Black Sand Beach, Skógafoss, and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. The car handled beautifully on Iceland's winding roads and steep hills and tough F roads that were mostly covered in ice when we ventured off the beaten track to capture more remote locations.

Unfortunately, our trip to Stokknes had to be cut short due to a heavy storm with 25 m/s winds! However, we were still able to explore and photograph some of Iceland's most stunning landscapes, walk on glaciers and swim in frozen lakes. Our experience was unforgettable, and we were able to capture a unique, and perhaps some of the first sets of images featuring the new Land Rover Defender in a winter Iceland setting.

Overall, the trip was a fantastic opportunity to explore Iceland's stunning natural beauty and put the PHEV Land Rover Defender 110 to the test. I am incredibly grateful to Zero Car for providing me with this incredible opportunity to explore Iceland in style and comfort and thanks to the Icelandic weather gods for allowing me to fly the DJI A2S and capture some unique angles.

Mercedes-Benz: The Drive for Mastery

I recently had the opportunity to work on a photo shoot featuring the brand new Mercedes-Benz S-Class in collaboration with a team of talented individuals, including Calum Currie as the DOP, Chris Nichols as Director, myself and Jack Harding as photographers, as well as Francesca Petta and Roberto Napolitano, featured models.

The shoot aimed to juxtapose the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class with a young pianist who has been striving for mastery his whole life, representing the precision and elegance of the S-Class, which is a true masterpiece of engineering.

The shoot was challenging, a perfectly black car and perfectly black piano sounded on paper like an automotive photographer’s nightmare with all those reflections, but it forced us to bring our creativity to the table. We shot at 3 beautiful locations, one in Snowdonia with natural light, another in an airport hangar where we built a set featuring lighting provided by Nanlite and smoke to enhance the mood creating a super cinematic effect, and the final location was a piano restoration workshop in Buckinghamshire. The resulting images aim to showcase the beauty and sophistication of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the aspirational message of being driven for mastery.

Ocean Bottle: Reusable bottles that help save the ocean

During my time working at a Volvo Car UK dealer group in 2018-2020, I had the opportunity to create a PR project off the back of Volvo Car UK's 'Unseen Ocean' initiative, which involved bringing awareness to children about the importance of recycling plastic and the harm it causes to the ocean. Beyond the campaign developed by Volvo, I decided to make extra efforts to partner the Volvo brand with this cause by making the Volvo Birmingham dealership I worked for a 'Refill' station where passers-by could refill their reusable water bottles as well as organising a visit to a local primary school to talk about the subject and host interactive activities to engage the pupils.

Skip forward to 2022, and my involvement with plastic pollution tackling and the 'Refill' brand continues with a small campaign I shot for Ocean Bottle in Iceland...

Exploring Iceland in a Jeep Wrangler

Being an Automotive Photographer who loves adventure, this trip was perfect. I teamed up with Zero Car to address the ever-changing social media algorithm’s thirst for short video content and meaningful imagery capturing the amazing places a 4x4 vehicle can take you in Iceland. I took a small team with me that comprised my ‘partner in crime’ and close friend Jake Osborne as the videographer, as well as an assistant and a model to help deliver the list of content we needed from the week.

Our adventure started as soon as we landed in Keflavik; we collected our blue Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and headed to Rekjavik for some rest before our alarms went off for us to get up and head for the south coast.

Indian Scout Bobber

K-Tech Suspension engineers high-performance suspension systems for motorcycles of all disciplines. This project aimed to capture the brand within a retro custom motorcycle scene. For this shoot, I decided to take a small team down to Digbeth in Birmingham; an edgy part of the city known for its growing creative scene, graffiti-covered walls and cobbled streets, the perfect location to demonstrate the sophisticated suspension systems and sleek looks of their products.

Photographing the Formula E - London 2022 ePrix

In July 2022, I had the opportunity to photograph the Formula E 2022 London ePrix for Spacesuit Media Ltd, commissioned by FIA Formula E. My mission was to capture the energy of the event, including unique events such as the 'Electric Hot Laps' and VIP clubs like the 'Boss Emotion Club,' as well as the race weekend’s overall atmosphere.

As a professional motorsport photographer, this was one of the most challenging assignments I've ever taken on. The tight timeframes and complex logistics required careful planning and coordination, not to mention the post-production work. I almost had to be in 6 places at once to fulfil the brief, however, I'm proud of the result: a collection of images that showcase the excitement and unique character of the Formula E 2022 London ePrix that I’m proud to share. If you’re a motorsport media agency looking for high-quality imagery to showcase a team or event, feel free to contact me to discuss working together. Click here to get in touch.

Prestige Auto Group - VOODOO Custom Vehicles

Prestige Auto Group is a company I have been a freelance automotive photographer for some time now. Their customised pickup trucks (Voodoo) attract a demographic who appreciate bespoke designs that turn heads in urban settings but are also utilitarian and functional. As a photographer I had to capture images that clearly show how unique the vehicles are, focusing on particular products as well as demonstrating them in real-life scenarios.

Here is a selection of images I took at their HQ in Telford, UK demonstrating the customised vehicles in the showroom. These images were shot and edited to reflect the brand tone; clean, premium and unique.

Milltek Sport - Tunerfest South at Brands Hatch Circuit

After numerous events were cancelled from the pandemic, the UK had a moment to breathe as restrictions were lifted allowing Brands Hatch Circuit to host Tunerfest South.

As part of the Milltek Sport Exhaust marketing strategy, we took the Milltek fleet consisting of a brand new BMW M135i, a Mercedes CLA 45S and the Audi RSQ8 towing along a little Ford Fiesta ST, to exhibit the brand and to connect with fellow tuners and enthusiasts in the south.

My role as a professional photographer was to capture Milltek Sport’s presence at the event and to exhibit the potential of their products being used on the track by various race teams and tuners. I needed to photograph a range of scenes to capture both Milltek brand-focused imagery, unique moments from Tunerfest South, and to create exciting content exhibiting the potential of their products inspiring people to join the Milltek tuning community.

Here’s my selection of content taken from the day…

High Quality Photo Retouching

As a professional photographer, a huge part of my work is spent on post-production. This is not only where I engineer tones, colours and image effects in Adobe Lightroom, but also where I spend hours sometimes retouching and perfecting images in Adobe Photoshop to remove imperfections, props and tools used in the shoot, as well as layering images together when using particular lighting techniques.

Below are a set of images taken by Rob Smalley at Scene Studios in Nottingham, retouched by myself as part of a project for K-Tech Suspension.

Although Rob Smalley and his assistant Simon Bernacki did a great job of shooting the images by removing dust, wiping fingerprints and using clear wire to prop products; there was still a fair bit of work to do after the shoot to get the images where they needed to be for use on billboards, websites and social media etc

Here are some before and afters of Rob’s images I edited for K-Tech Suspension…

K-Tech Suspension - Bennetts British Superbike

During my time working for K-Tech Suspension, I’ve had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the UK’s top motorcycle racers at BSB, Super Stock and other motorcycle championships. The aim of these shoots was to capture the association between K-Tech Suspension, and various riders such as Tommy Bridewell, John McGuinness, Danny Buchan and many more.

During race weekends, the K-Tech support team communicate with riders to collect subjective feedback on issues or ride characteristics, as well as quantitative data to optimise a suspension setup for each track, each weather condition and each strategy requirement over the season.

Photographing these live race events come with challenges as it’s easy to get in the way of the busy environment as team members rush around changing tyres and swapping shocks in time for the next race. Knowing the safe zones and picking my moments were crucial to getting these shots.
